What is solar energy and what can it do for you? Solar energy uses sunlight collected from panels, instead of using fossil fuel and foreign oil. It lowers energy bills, is a free and renewable resource, and is better for the environment – a win-win situation all around. Solar energy can be used for thermal (heat) energy to warm water and spaces in homes, buildings, or pools.
Qualifications for solar energy are not complicated and installation is simple. Homes only need a minimum of 100 square feet of roof exposed to the sun, preferably facing southward. Solar panels (Solar photovoltaic or PV panels) are mounted on your roof, where they collect energy from sunlight. The cells then convert into a form of direct current electricity. That power is in turn converted by an inverter into alternating current electricity for home use. Alternating current electricity is fed directly into homes, the same as with your electricity company. Another solar energy advantage is it works in unison with your electricity provider; homes continue to get electricity when solar energy systems are not sufficient -- on cloudy days and night time.
Solar energy systems hold up well in extreme weather, such as hail and strong winds, and no maintenance is required of residents. Solar energy can reduce over 8,000 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions every year in the DFW area. That is the equivalent of keeping 200 cars off the road!
