Solar Energy is Green

You’ve probably heard the term “carbon footprint,” and wonder what it means. Simply defined, it means reducing the amount of damage we as humans do to the environment as we go about our lives. “Going green” means using energy wisely. We like to think we’re one of the few green electricians out there.

At Abbott Electric, Inc., being a “green electrician,” means we’re environmentally-conscious, and enjoy helping our customers with the same belief system. It’s easy to go green without feeling restricted. Here are a few energy tips that are kind to Mother Nature:

  • Unplug appliances when not in use. "Smart" power strips are also available, sensing when appliances are off and cuts "ghost” energy use.
  • Set thermostats a little lower in the winter and a little higher in the summer. It’s good for your electric bill, too!
  • Eat green. Eating more salads and foods that don’t require cooking saves energy. Thawing frozen foods reduces cooking times too, thus having the same positive affect. While cooking, cover pots and pans to get the most out of the sealed in heat.
  • Be a green computer user. Don’t just let your home PC “go to sleep.” Turn it off completely after you’re finished using it.
  • Use cold water to wash clothes whenever possible. Over 80% of energy is used to heat water in washing machines.
  • Give the dryer a rest. Air dry clothes when you can.
  • Use “green” (energy-saving) light bulbs. They significantly reduce greenhouse gases and are available at most grocery stores.
  • Don’t discard electronics until absolutely necessary, and donate or recycle them responsibly when they wear out.
  • Consider and investigate using green energy like solar and wind for your home.
